Leipzig [1840]. Theodor Thomas. 14.5x23.5 cm, pp. IV, 169, black and white illustrations (72 steel engravings), hardcover with period, half leather with gilt. Good condition (taped title page, rubbing of binding).
A striking publication featuring the most beautiful places in the United States, published in the mid-nineteenth century with dozens of intaglios by Albert Payne, an English intaglio artist and engraver, working in Leipzig from 1836, and William Bartlett, an English illustrator and printmaker who made several trips to the United States between 1835 and 1852, during which he produced many engravings. Some of them were used in this book.
