"Ashes" began to appear in episodes of the Warsaw "Tygodnik Ilustrowany" in June 1902. According to Stanislaw Piolun-Noyszewski, the plan for the novel was already conceived in Rapperswil, i.e. before 1897; there Żeromski began to collect historical materials for it, as evidenced by the use of Leonard Chodźko's collection. He later continued this work on the sidelines of his classes at the Zamoyski Library in Warsaw. The piece offered at auction is a 1925 Mortkowicz edition in a striking, luxurious binding by Robert Jahoda, a renowned Krakow bookbinder. The books are bound in full leather, ornamentation on the face and back of the bindings, marbled linings, decorated with gold borders, the edges of the bindings are also decorated, the upper edge of the block is gilded. On the back of the bindings is the graphic mark of the Mortkowicz Publishing House. In each volume pastedown with signature of Robert Jahoda.
