"Legend" is not a novel and is not a collection of novellas. "Legend" is a description of the history of the Polish ranks, formed under the Russian partition back in 1914. The dates and facts are strictly historical, and the feelings expressed in "Legend" are the feelings of those who, sometimes in a completely hopeless moment, with some fierce obstinacy, with the faith of madmen, fought for the Independence and unification of the Fatherland. The hero of "Legend" is the Polish Army, the warp - the love of war, the love of Poland. [from the preface]
